Manuscript is dedicated to Eugene de Beauharnais, Viceroy of Italy, Prince of Venice and Archchancellor of the French Empire, and describes how modifications were to be made on the Palazzo Caprara and adjacent buildings to receive and provide lodging for Napoleon. The edifices, plazas, and churches mentioned in the ms. are identified in the accompanying drawing.

Eugène de Beauharnais was the son of Alexandre de Beauharnais and Josephine de Tascher de La Pagerie (the future Josephine Napoleon). After the marriage of Josephine and Napoleon, Eugène was adopted by Napoleon (but was not considered heir to the throne).
